Dr. Tavares was born in Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau). He graduated from the Faculdade de Medicina of the University of Lisbon, Portugal.

Education and Training
  • Fellowship in Critical Care in the Department of Anesthesiology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and New York Hospital/Cornell University in New York. Pulmonary Fellowship at New York Hospital Queens
  • Sleep Fellowship: Department of Psychiatry at State University of New York in Stony Brook, New York
  • One year of lnterventional Pulmonology with Dr. J.F. Turner at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. 
  • He is board certified in lntemal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine
  • ECMO training at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and the University of Michigan

Teaching

 

  • From 2003 to 2007, while a teaching faculty at University of Nevada School of Medicine, Dr. Tavares received the Outstanding Community Physician Award (2004), Excellence in Teaching Award (2005), Best Overall Physician Award (2006) and Excellence in Teaching Award (2007).
  • Current medical director of Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) at Sunrise Hospital. 

 

National Awards

Dr Joseph and Rae Brown Award: For significantly advancing quality care for critically ill and injured patients at local and regional level-presented at the Society of Critical Care Medicine Awards and Grants presentation in Miami Beach, Florida (2010). Castle Connolly Top Doctor since 2015.

Dr. Tavares is married with one son and one daughter. He likes Jogging and soccer (he was national champion while playing for Sport Bissau and Benfica in Guinea- Bissau and college champion for the soccer team of the School of Medicine in Lisbon, Portugal).
